Exposed sluts nammed6/1/2023 ![]() It explores how the selfregulator, the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA), set to adjudicate over most matters on harmful materials broadcast on TV and radio, has interpreted the universally accepted right to nondiscrimination based on sex and/or gender within the context of song lyrics which demean women and serve to entrench damaging stereotypes. With lyrics clearly constituting verbal abuse and in some cases expressing misogyny neatly tucked into a good tune, this Article argues that we are not tearing down, but cementing, stereotypes of women that are not contributing to female liberation and equality. By doing so we are constantly confronted with lyrics that degrade women, but in general we don't take notice of this. ![]() Every day most of us turn on the radio to be entertained by a steady flow of music broadcast through a myriad of commercial radio stations.
